The Symington Family Release 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports

We are very pleased to announce the launch of our 2019 Vintage Ports. We have produced small quantities of Vintage Port from six of our principal quintas in 2019 and have selected two to release En Primeur – Quinta do Vesuvio and Dow’s Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira.⁣

The other four Quinta Vintage Ports produced in 2019 – Graham’s Quinta dos Malvedos, Dow’s Quinta do Bomfim, Warre’s Quinta da Cavadinha and Cockburn’s Quinta dos Canais – will age in our cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for future release.⁣

The 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports are the result of an erratic growing season, with a little over 50% of the average winter rainfall in the Douro and almost none in the summer, but for some showers at the end of August. Head Winemaker, Charles Symington, exercised patience and precisely timed the picking over six weeks – making it one of the longest harvests in recent years. The reward was a collection of perfectly ripe grape varieties in good quantities (averaging 1.27 kg/vine), delivering lively and exuberant wines.

Charles Symington and fifth generation port producer Harry Symington will present our 2019 Quinta Vintage Ports via Instagram Live (@symingtonfamilyestates) on April 22nd at 19h00 (Lisbon/London time) in discussion with five guests from around the world.

Quinta do Vesúvio 2019 Vintage Port

Considered to be one of the most magnificent estates in the Douro Valley, Quinta do Vesúvio is the last major property in the region to produce its ports exclusively using the traditional method of treading in granite lagares – an unbroken tradition since the winery was built in 1827.

Late summer rain after an unusually dry winter and spring proved pivotal in achieving the balanced development and complete ripeness of the Touriga Franca and Touriga Nacional. Characterised by blackcurrant and lavender aromas with traces of fennel, the wine delivers mouth-filling ripe black fruit flavours on the palate; opulent and velvety, although with substantial volume and weighty structure.

En primeur release: 775 (12 x 75cl cases)

Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira 2019 Vintage Port

Quinta da Senhora da Ribeira is one of the classic riverside Douro Quintas and has belonged to Dow’s Port since 1890. Famous for being one of the two principal estates that make up the legendary Dow’s Vintage Ports, the quinta is also renowned for producing magnificent Single Quinta Vintage Ports.

The hallmark violet aromas long-associated with Senhora da Ribeira’s terroir are complemented by hints of rock rose, reflecting this year’s cooler profile. Rich, ripe black fruit flavours, simultaneously forward and rounded fill the palate, with juicy tannins complementing the fruit and providing balance to the wine’s fine structure.

En primeur release: 375 (12 x 75cl cases)

Quinta dos Malvedos 2019 Vintage Port

Quinta dos Malvedos has been the cornerstone of Graham’s Vintage Ports ever since it was acquired in 1890. The Quinta still contains large areas of traditional vineyard laid out on terraces supported by dry-stone walls, which face north-east, east and west, giving the estate wines a unique identity.

A great Malvedos with typical minty aromas and undertones of cacao and berry fruits. The mouth has a firm tannic structure and succulent blackberry flavours. A bold, powerful wine promising many years in bottle. A true Malvedos thoroughbred.

To be aged in our cellars for future release.

Quinta do Bomfim 2019 Vintage Port

One of the finest Douro estates, Quinta do Bomfim is at the heart of Dow’s, providing the main structure for its legendary Vintage Ports since 1896. The estate is situated in the Upper Douro Valley with schist slopes arranged in vineyard terraces, which have yielded Dow’s most memorable wines for over a century.

2019’s cooler summer conditions favoured balanced ripening conditions at Bomfim, and this is reflected with its freshness and expressive aromas of blackberries, spice and pepper, with some floral undertones. The palate is typically dry with plenty of grip giving extraordinary length.

To be aged in our cellars for future release.

Quinta da Cavadinha 2019 Vintage Port

Quinta da Cavadinha is the foundation of Warre’s Vintage Ports. A considerable proportion of the estate is made up of old, mixed vineyards, some of which are over half a century old. Yields are rarely above 1kg/vine and these grapes provide superb complexity and structure to the wines.

The year’s cooler profile proved particularly beneficial for Cavadinha’s plantings of old, field-blended vines, which give this wine its distinct complexity, refinement and depth. Finesse and balance are achieved, resulting in elegant, floral aromas, round fine tannins, and ample acidity with a good length in the mouth.

To be aged in our cellars for future release.

Quinta dos Canais 2019 Vintage Port

Quinta dos Canais is laid out on a natural amphitheatre overlooking a pronounced bend in the Douro River. The estate has a large proportion of mature Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca which provide an essential component of Cockburn’s Vintage Ports.

2019’s extended ripening cycle and late summer rain helped to perfectly fine-tune the Touriga Nacional, so synonymous with Canais’ profile. Fresh and lively, this wine boasts resinous forest scents in tandem with typical Canais red fruit notes. On the palate there is red fruit (cherries), toffee, and spicy, peppery tannins, along with Cockburn’s trademark grip on the long, dry finish.

To be aged in our cellars for future release.
